Don't get me wrong here, runes aren't an easy thing to understand. You really have to know your stuff. I just try to engage my students.

I realize that, yes. They most definitely aren't easy. But I would expect first years to be able to figure this out easily. Otherwise I would be rather disappointed. But I suppose if you're just trying to be generous because the end of the year is approaching, there's no harm in that. A soft approach, but nothing inherently bad.

Of course I'm trying to give them a little help in the end. They have to do a number of things for the final. So an easy last test with the possibility of extra credit could be you know, somethin' like a present!

It's been fun. I had a good class to start with. I'm glad it was third years rather than first years. This class is way over a first year's understanding. I'm sure my methods are a bit haphazard, but for me and the students it has been fun!

Not that I'm trying to insult their intelligence. There are just a lot of things you need to understand before going into a runes class. I even warn them of this when they entered my class.

[He lays his notes out on the desk, the runes drawn out carefully on the first page. Ehwaz is labelled 'Ehwaz - from the proto-Germanic language. In this its literal meaning is horse; however it is more commonly used in modern times to represent partnership, such as when riding a horse.' Eihwaz is labelled 'Eihwaz - from the proto-Germanic language, appearing also in the Anglo-Saxon runes. In these it meant yew, but in current usage it means defence.']

Ehwaz- [his emphasis is fairly definitely on the eh sound] -generally used for partnership. Not to be confused with Eihwaz- [which he pronounces almost entirely like I was] -which commonly represents defence.

…though of course a partnership works best if you're looking out for the points where you need to defend each other.
