Hi everybody! I'm Vashti Middens, and I'm really liking it here so far. The common room is a bit crowded (and it's kind of a little overwhelming!), but I expect houses don't normally bunk together, so. Anyway.

Dad said there are trips to the village for the older students? I don't know when the next one's happening, but I was hoping to make arrangements with somebody to get some blood lollipops for me when you go there. I'm willing to pay you back for them.

...Lies are necessary sometimes. I can see your point about greed. But I don't think I know any bitter people, unless you're one. I think this bitterness might be clouding your judgement.

What about loyalty, love, a sense of community?

Oh, you will be bitter when you're older, don't worry!

My parents aren't bitter. They're older.

Don't they have anything to do with holding society together?

Huh. Maybe they're just really good at hiding it.

No?

Or maybe they're actually happy. I mean, sure, they get annoyed about stuff from time to time, but they don't dwell on it.

You honestly expect me to believe a whole bunch of people act as a group without any loyalty, love, or sense of community binding them together? You do understand that 'society' means 'a group of individuals who act as a whole', right?

And that's what I believe, anyway.

I never thought of being happy as weird before. Doesn't everyone want to be happy?

Greed and bitterness aren't very good holders-together by themselves. They're kind of more things that drive people apart. And the lies that hold people together are usually told because of love or loyalty to somebody.

Well, yeah, everyone wants to be. I just don't think lots of people are.

Look, you're just a kid! You'll know more when you're older.

More people would be if they did right by each other.

I could know more now if you explained better.

Well, yeah technically it is. I mean, most people aren't born werewolves or vampires. Most are made. And when bitten, the disease (for lack of a better term) pretty much overtakes a humans body.
