Hi everybody! I'm Vashti Middens, and I'm really liking it here so far. The common room is a bit crowded (and it's kind of a little overwhelming!), but I expect houses don't normally bunk together, so. Anyway.

Dad said there are trips to the village for the older students? I don't know when the next one's happening, but I was hoping to make arrangements with somebody to get some blood lollipops for me when you go there. I'm willing to pay you back for them.

Do you remember what first year classes are like? We've barely gotten started, and Dad couldn't remember much about them. This is very different from a muggle school. The material. I guess I'm asking how hard this stuff is.

What? No, I just like the taste of blood. It's tangy.

Are they really that closely asoassociated with vampires? I mean, you don't have to go to a specialty shop for them. I always assumed they had a broader fanbase.

Gosh, I'm not sure what to tell you... Mum's a witch, so I was used to a lot of it, just not actually using magic.

Dad stuck mostly to potions, so I know what to expect with that a bit, but he didn't really do much of this other stuff? I guess because we live in a muggle neighborhood.

Oh! That's lucky; I'm really awful at potions.

Anyway, I think most of the teachers make sure everyone can handle things in first year!

You've got to be really exact with some things, like stirring. I can see why it could be hard. I like the way they change color and stuff in the cauldron. It's kind of fun, for me at least.

That's good. Is there a class you like?

Yeah, that can be hard for me. I do like the colours, though.

Care of Magical Creatures is probably my favorite.

They can turn some really awesome colors. And sometimes they glow. I really like the potions that keep glowing when they're done. Those are the best.

Oh, neat! That sounds like a cool class. What kind of animals have you gotten to learn about?

Huh..that's interesting.

I guess I just wouldn't think many people would like the taste of blood? That brings up an interesting question though. I wonder how many regular people enjoy them.

Vampires are people too you know. It's legally official and everything.

Rare meat, blood sausage, blood pudding--plenty of regular people like blood. It's a good source of protein and iron. Admitting it just bothers some people for some reason?

Oh, I'm not saying they're not. I meant people in the sense of people that are still fully human.

That's true. I guess some people would worry about the vampire stigma.

Didn't know anyone even liked those blood stuff. You sure you haven't got them confused with another sweet?

There are plenty of other people that aren't human in the magic world. I... don't know if Dad ever mentioned that to me before? I can't remember it coming up, anyway. Then we went to the bank and there were all the goblins! And Dad just mentioned oh yeah they're counted as beings too, and then we--after the bank--talked about other beings, and he brought up how some people weren't legally recognized and that was weird to think about. Then he started talking about politics again and I wish he wouldn't do that because it's confusing.

Oops, rambling. Sorry.

Anyway, yeah. Don't know what they're so worried about. 'S just blood.

If nobody liked them, they wouldn't sell them. And they're kind of hard to confuse for other sweets.

They're these lollipops, and they're full of blood. They're delicious, you should try one sometime.

No thanks. The last time I had blood in my mouth, somebody decked me across the face.

I don't mind getting them for you, I suppose. How many do you want?

No. I do a lot of boxing back home, and sometimes I get socked a little too hard.

Alright then. What's your name, and where and when can I pass them to you?

Oh, I know. It's just that some Wizards really don't consider other beings with equal intellect on par with them. Werewolves, vampires, goblins, house elves, veela, etc. etc.
Are they recognized as intelligent beings? Yes. The Ministry refers to them as "Creatures of Near Human Intellect" Nevermind that werewolves and vampires were originally human.
Considered equals though? Far from it.

I'm Vashti Middens, and at breakfast would probably be the easiest time and place. I'm the only first year with green hair, so I'll be pretty easy to pick out.

I'm not sure? I was messing with Dad's potions equipment when I was a kid, and I must have made some kind of hair super-dye or something. It's just been green ever since.
