I rarely force people to do things, John. I've tried being a bully and it is such tiring work. All that threatening and posturing, ugh. I prefer to persuade people. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don't.

In Sherlock's case, he usually chooses the latter, as you can imagine.

Hardly that. Sherlock isn't the only one capable of making deductions from a single glance, and the people around him are substantially less capable of hiding their histories from their appearances.
